Why Warm White LED Streetlights Are Better for Our Environment?
LED street lighting is designed to illuminate roadways, streets and adjacent areas to enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians. Characteristics of energy-efficient, long lifetime, low maintenance, green and environment friendly, many cities have started to convert from HID to LED street lighting. However, as warm white LED streetlights are capable of emitting different colors of light, not every color is applied for outdoor space, bright blue-rich white light can cause some issues for residents, local wildlife, and night sky visibility. When it comes to street light, the warmer the color/ CCT the better.
CCT will tell you what hue and tone of white to expect from a specific streetlight. It is measured in Kelvin (K). Different temperatures on the Kelvin scale represent different colors. For example, light at 2000K-3500K looks more orange/yellow and is called ultra warm or warm white, and as temperature increases in Kelvin, color changes to more of a “paper white” known as natural or neutral white (between 3500K and 5100K) and finally into a bluish-white known as cool white (5100K-20000K).
Different lighting applications require different CCT. In a low illuminating surroundings, low CCT makes people comfortable and high CCT makes people cold. In a high brightness place, low CCT makes people muggy and high CCT makes people happy. Working environment asks for high CCT and resting places ask for low CCT.
LED street light is cool white when it is in 5000K, and the light is white, and it is not suitable for roadway lighting because 5000K CCT make people feel cold and dazzling visually then makes people visual fatigue, reduce people long distance observation and increase the safety risk for drivers.
Under the LED lighting of around 3000K CCT, the human eye has decent dark adaption time and color discrimination abilities, the LED light at this CCT also has relatively high luminous efficacy and less adverse effect on our physical and mental well-being. In a lighting design color rendering index (CRI), CCT, glare control, flicker, mesopic vision illuminance, dark adaption, blue light hazard, color perception, fog penetration, and skyglow pollution are integral components of any project assessment that determine a light's suitability for street lighting. Obviously warm white LED street light is the best light sources for road lighting.
